Sri Hemkunt Sahib Ji - August 2007

Went to India in August 2007 (I know I was crazy to go in August, but I just forget how hot it gets).

I went for two weeks. One week was spent going to Sri Hemkunt Sahib Ji. Here is a map of the journey (blue line)

It was quite tough because of the tight schedule, which wasn't helped by the odd land slide along the way!!!

We set off during the night from Panjab and got to Hrishikesh at about 1.30am. We slept for a few hours at a huge gurdwara complex. We all got up for a bout 6.00am and set off for Gobind Ghat. This was as far as the car would go. From now on it was all going to be on foot.

We had a good nights rest (at a gurdwara complex again)and woke up at about 5.00am. The first part of the walk was to Gobind Dham. It was a 13 km trek along the river Ganga in some beautiful scenery. The path was mostly good and not too steep. It took a full day to do the walk to Gobind Dham.

The next day we woke up very early at about 4.00am because the plan was to get to Hemkunt Sahib Ji and then go all the way back down to Gobind Ghat. It would be very tight. The trek from Gobind Dham to Hemkunt Sahib Ji was very tough. It was 7km steep path with very few flat sections. The air was getting thin and we were noticeably more breathless. We finally reached Hemkunt Sahib Ji at about 10am. It was a clear crisp morning and we could see for miles. We did our dips in the lake and did Ardaas. It suddenly became overcast so we decided to make a move and set off back down.

We had to rush down and try to get to Gobind Ghat before it got dark. Unfortunately a group of us had to do the last 3km in darkness. There were about 20 of us walking, as fast as they could, down a broken path sharing the light from one persons torch. That was an experience I won't forget in a hurry.

Fortunately we all got down in one piece and the next day we set off for home.

Here are some photos of the journey

Purab Aur Paschim -Twinkle Twinkle

I was inspired by Mr Singh's post about a new film and how it was similar to Purab aur Paschim, the classic film by Manoj Kumar.

I decided to upload a song from the film. It's the nursery rhyme 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' with a desi twist.

Sikh Guru's Family Tree

I came across a site called Geni. It's a site where you can map your family tree.

I thought it would be good to map out the Sikh Gurus family tree. So that you can see exactly how each of the Gurus were related.

The tree starts with Guru Amar Das Ji and goes all the way to Guru Gobind Singh Ji. I have started it at Guru Amar Das Ji because he was related in some way to all the Gurus after him.

I have setup a general user called Gur Sikh. To view or edit the family tree log on at Geni.com with the email address 13gursikh@googlemail.com and password 13gursikh.

I have only added Gurus and their Mothers and Fathers to the tree. It would be nice to have all the Gurus relatives on the site.

It would also be good to have all the gurus on the site some how.

The resource used to create the family tree were SikhiWiki and info-sikh.

Please edit the tree if you see any mistakes.

How to get up earlier in the morning

During the last few weeks I have been trying to get up earlier in the morning.

Unfortunately I have been failing miserably.

The pattern seems to be as follows. Every night I tell myself that I will wake up earlier so that I can do things like Path or finish off things that I didn't finish during the evening / night. I set my alarm for 6:00am. During the night I wake up at various times during the night, usually about 3:00am. My mind tells me that it is too early to get up and I go back to sleep. Then I wake up again around about 6:00am. I look at the clock and think of a million different reasons to stay in bed. I go back to sleep.

I eventually wake up at 7:30am - 7:45am, just enough time to get me to work before 9:00am.

So why is it that I can't get up early to do my own work but can get up when I know I have to get up for my job.

I have talked about this with my brother and cousins (Nandeep & Juggy).

I think the main strategy is to get up as soon as you wake up, this should stop the discussion that you have with yourself about the pros and cons of getting up, and to do something productive with the extra time that you have.

The few times I have managed to get up earlier, I do feel much more awake. It is just that it hasn't happened enough.

Many people say that there is something special about waking up early. They seem to be more connected to God and the Universe at that time. (Between 3:00am and 6:00am is generally considered to be Amrit Vela in many religions including Sikhism).

If anybody has any tips for getting up earlier then please let me know

Remotely controlling you music (Win XP)

I found this trick by accident.

Overview

The following procedure will allow you to play music on your computer without having to be in the same location. The music can be controlled from one location and it will play in another location.

1. Set up your music output computer so that you can remote desktop to it.

2. Set up your remote control computer / laptop so that you can remote desktop to the music output computer.

3. Start playing some music from your music output computer. I have tested it with WinAmp (This has to be done from the computer itself and not through Remote Desktop).

4. Remote Desktop to the music output computer from the remote control computer / laptop while the music is playing. You must log on with the same username and password as you used to log on to the computer locally

5. You will notice that the music continues to play on the music output computer rather than being outputted to the remote control computer.

6. Now change the track that is playing on the music output computer. The track will change and will still be outputted to the speakers on the music output computer.

I don't really know what use this is but I'm sure it has a use. Maybe a Remote Disc Jockey (RDJ) craze will sweep the nation.

If anybody needs more information about any of the steps then let me know

Standalone You Tube Viewer (C#)

I wanted to do some work with API's and Web Services so I decided to create a standalone You Tube Video Viewer. I used C#.Net 2.0 to create it. The source is freely available to modify if you want.

Some of the features of the You Tube Viewer are:

Works independently of your browser.
Search facility built in
View thumbnail and description of video before playing
Fully re sizable

There are probable other You Tube Viewers available, I just wanted to give it a go.

Must apologies that it has only been tested on Win XP. I am not sure if Mono on Linux is compatible with .Net 2.0.

Let me know what you think

Three Peaks Challenge - Scafell Pike ( Scare Fell)

The walk up Ben Nevis was a real experience. All the way down I was debating with myself about whether I should continue with the challenge or not. I decided to wait until we got to Scafell Pike to see if I wanted to continue.

We set off for Scafell Pike, the second peak in our challenge.

The drive to Scafell was done overnight. We all tried to get a bit of sleep (except the driver) to recover from 'The Ben' but it was difficult having 6 people in a VW Sharan all trying to get comfortable at the same time. I didn't think I got any sleep but everybody said I did so I must have got some.

We reached the starting point for Scafell Pike at about 1 - 2 am in the morning. This was too early to start because under the rules you are not supposed to start before 4 ish in the morning as this can disturb the locals. We decided to stop the clock and get a bit more sleep.

It got to about 3 ish and it became apparent that we couldn't sleep any more. We saw some people in a camp site near by, they were preparing to start the hike. We decided that it should be ok to start our hike.

It was still pitch black so everybody checked their head torches. I felt pretty good after the sleep and rest in the People Carrier so I decided to carry on. I made a concious effort to pack a lot less than on 'The Ben' with only a sandwich, a small lucozade bottle, my water pack and a sandwich.

We started the hike with a walk through some farms and then got on to the hike proper. It was decided that we would take frequent stops and walk together because it was dark and no one knew the proper way up.

Scafell is supposed to be the most difficult of the 3 peaks because of the terrain, the fact that you don't see the summit until the very end and there is some scrambling involved.

I was feeling really good as we went up, I tried to stay with the leader as much as I could.

There were a lot of stops because navigating in the dark was really hard. This helped me in a way as the frequent stops allowed me and everyone else to rest.

It was starting to get light so we decided to have a drinks break before the last stage of the hike. Surprisingly I was still feeling good.

Scafell's terrain was mostly small rocks until we got about three quarters of the way up. Then it turned into big boulders. I didn't like this section because it meant that I had to lift my legs more than a millimetre in order to jump over the gaps between the boulders (By this time my style of walking was more like sliding rather than discreet steps, so this was difficult).

I was near the back of the pack but still walking strong, we were all fairly close together. There was a peak fairly close to one side, a few of us thought (probably hoped) that it might be the summit. It wasn't to be...

Finally we saw the summit. The bad news was that we had to go down a steep path and then climb back up a path to get to the summit. I wasn't happy when I saw what we had to do.

We were going down quite a narrow ridge and I could see a fair way down the sides of the ridge. I thought that one wrong step could mean disaster (It wasn't that bad but it felt worse when I was there).

The final scramble to the top was quite scary because it was steep and there was loose stones all the way up.

As the sun was rising we reached the top. It was a very nice moment.

A group of girls was coming up the summit form another path. They were running up !!! I was amazed at that. They were doing the 3 Three peak challenge as well. One of them took our Summit photo and I took the Summit photograph for them. We had a quick chat and then the girls were off. We set off soon after.

Again the transition from uphill to downhill was major pain. The jogging technique helped as before. There was some great views as we walked down and I started to see why people do this kind of thing.

My knees felt sore, but were hurting less than then when walking down 'The Ben'.

We got to the bottom of Scafell and even managed to race the last bit (We regretted it when we got to the MPV).

The second peak had been completed and we were on the last leg and on our last legs :-) Next it was on to Snowdon.

Kranti Videos on YouTube

I've uploaded some videos from Manoj Kumar's Kranti.

I don't think it's up to the standard of his earlier films like Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim or Roti Kapada Aur Makhan but when you have Dilip Kumar and Manoj Kumar in one film then it's bound to be a quality film.

My favourite song in the film is Channa. The best part of the song is when the Dilip / Rafi combo kicks in. They both take the song to a different level.

The other songs I've uploaded are:

Sikhs and their Castes

I found this video on You Tube.

It shows how Sikhs are stuck in the Caste system more than most other people, even though they are supposed to be totally against the Caste system.

It's funny and has a great message

Three Peaks Challenge - Ben Nevis (The Ben)

We started at about 3pm on Saturday afternoon. One of my work colleges
had done the challenge before. He said that Ben Nevis was the longest
one of the three peaks, but it was easier than Scafell Pike. I was in confident mood as we started.

My
confidence was completely misplaced. As soon as we started I knew it
was going to be tough. The first section on Ben Nevis is fairly steep
and everybody else in the group was powering ahead, I was struggling
straight away. I was using a completely different set of muscles then I
ever did playing football or even normal running. On top of that it was
quite hot and I had a big back pack with me. I had been ultra cautious and packed the back pack with lots of extra stuff.

After
about half an hour of trying to catch up to the other, we decided that
we should all carry on at our own pace and then meet at the top. That
was fine by me because I was struggling to keep up. I carried on at my
own pace.

One of the things that I wasn't prepared for at all was the terrain. It was so varied. Some of it was big boulders that you had to climb over, some of it was bricks and some of it was like pebbles. The big boulders were really draining because you had to lift your leg up that extra bit for every step.

There
were lots of people coming back down as I climbed, they were all saying
that I was nearly there and there wasn't long to go. Some guys coming
down stopped where I was resting and we started talking about Monty Panaser
and how he was going to bowl out all the Aussies in the Ashes. It was a
really friendly atmosphere and everybody was trying to encourage one
another.

I really couldn't wait until I was coming down.

Finally
I reached the top. the rest of the group was waiting and taking
pictures of the view. They said that I was only about 10 -15 minutes
behind them. I was quite happy with that because all the way up I had
been thinking I was miles behind everyone else.

I had my photo
taken on the highest point in the U.K., had something to eat and
quickly prepared for the journey back. We split into two groups with
two fastest ones of the group going ahead and the rest of us in another
group.

Walking downhill felt completely different to walking up
hill. At first it felt really good because I was no longer using the
climbing muscles but the more we walked the more it felt like my knees
were going to explode. For some reason it felt better when we started
to jog down than when we were walking. I think it was because when you
walk you are constantly trying to stop yourself from running down, this
causes a greater impact on your knees whereas if you run / jog you can
go with the flow more and this reduces the impact on your knees.

We finally reached the bridge where we had started ( the other two and the driver were waiting for us ) the three
of us took our boots off and soaked our feet in the river under the
bridge. It felt good. We finally managed to get out of the river and
struggled into the people carrier to set off for Scarfell Pike...

My Media Centre Setup

I got a digital camera a few years ago. The family has taken loads of photos with it and I have been downloading photos and saving the photos on my computer. I have also been making DVD backups of the photos all the time.

The problem I have found is that digital photos are difficult to share with family. I know what you are saying. What about emailing your pics or uploading pics to a site like Flickr. That is all well and good but if you live in the same house as your family or you live in the same street and most of your family doesn't have broadband then I don't think it is practical. I wanted to share my photos and music so people who came over could see the photos and listen to my music down stairs.

I was also concious of the fact that I didn't have any backups of my music and video.

Keeping all this in mind I decided to create a media centre in the living room.

(I also had a spare computer lying about which help the decision to set up a media centre ;-)

I decided to try out Linux as the operating system because I wanted to try it out and I heard Myth TV was a very good media centre application. I used Ubuntu 6.06 as the Linux distribution.

One of the main requirement of the media centre was that it need to be downstairs so I had to use a wireless network card in the media centre pc.

I had a spare D-Link DWL-G650+ wireless card (ACX111 chipset) which I wanted to use. I setup the PC on a wired network just to install Ubuntu and get all the updates. Then I tried to configure the wireless card.

Ubuntu didn't detect it by default so I looked for information about how to get the wireless card installed. I found out the Ubuntu 6.06 had the wrong version of the drivers so didn't detect the card properly. I found the open source ACX 111 driver on sourceforge and tried them out, they didn't work. I tried ndisWrapper with the windows drivers from the D-Link CD that I got with the drivers, they didn't work.

I had been trying to sort the media centre for about two weeks on and off so I was getting abit peeved off with the situation. I read somewhere that Ubuntu 5 (breazy) had the correct version of the drivers that I required. So I decided to scrap my Ubuntu 6.06 installation and install Ubuntu 5 instead. I put the media centre close to the wireless router and began the installation. I was glad to see that Ubuntu detected the wireless card while installing, it asked for the ssid and the wep key.

It looked like I was finally ready to continue with the project.

Unfortunately the wireless signal where the Media Centre was to be kept, was non existent. (Even though a Windows machine works ok in the same area). This is probably because the D Link product uses a proprietary driver that the Generic Linux driver doesn't fully replicate. This mean that the whole project was stalled.

Finally with a heavy heart I had to turn to my Windows XP CD and install it on the Media Centre.

I don't blame Linux for not supporting my wireless card. The simple fact is that D Link is a company that openly uses open source code in it's products but it doesn't give anything back to the community by opening up it's driver specification so that the Linux community can make drivers for D Links products.

It's all about the money!!!

Three Peaks of Great Britain Challenge

Last weekend my work collegues and I did the three peaks callenge. The callenge is to climb the three peaks of Great Britain in 24 hours or less. The three peaks of Great Britain are Ben Nevis (Scotland), Scafell Pike (England) and Snowden (Wales).

It was one of the most difficult things that I have ever done. I thought I would be fine doing the callenge without specific training because I am quite fit and play football a couple of times a week. I WAS WRONG. If you try to do the callenge please do some specific training before attempting it.

I completed the challenge in 22 hours 57 minutes. I am glad I did it but I won't attempt it again in a hurry.

World Cup Diary - Day 21 - 26

I thought that I should conclude my World Cup Diary by briefly discussing the remaining days of the World Cup in one final blog.

ENG 0 POR 0 (Portugal won 3-1 on penalties)

It
was a familiar end to England's hopes in the World Cup. It was a tense
and subdued perform ace by England again. Rooney's sending off was not
a sending off. Rooney was looking for the ball with his foot and
accidentally stepped onCarvalho. All the commentators and pundits were just waiting for the opportunity to have go at Rooney and they got their chance.

England showed a bit of passion after going down to 10 men but didn't have the flair to open up Portugal.

Portugal
are not a nice team. They have the mentality of trying to win at all
cost without any notion of sportsmanship. This has been drilled into
them by Big Phil. I am glad he is not going to manage England.

BRA 0 FRA 1

The
old men of France gave the Brazil team a lesson in how to play. This
was the Brazil team who thought they had won the world cup before a
ball had been kicked.

Zidane ran the show in Midfield, with Viera and Makalele tidying up behind him. It was really good to watch a great player playing at his best.

Brazil
couldn't cope with how the French team was setup. The game was
definitely won in midfield, where Brazil were distinctly lightweight.

Henry's goal was good and it was just what France deserved.

GER 0 ITA 2

The Italians had cruised into the semi finals with wins over a plucky Australia and a poor Ukraine.

This was a great match with both teams attacking from the outset. After normal time it was goalless.
In extra time Italy decided to attack because they knew that Germany
have a superb record in penalty shootouts. This tactic paid off whenGrosso who has grown into a great player during the tournament curled in a shot that will be remembered for a long time to come. Del Piero finish off a break away late to seal Germany's fate.

Germany were refreshingly good to watch through out the tournament and they should be proud of what they achieved.

POR 0 FRA 1

Zidane scored the penalty that sealed his date with destiny. Portugal were poor and deserved to go out.

THE FINAL

ITA 1 FRA 1 (ITA win on penalties)

In an incident packed final Zidane
was the centre of attention. After 6 minutes he scored with an amazing
chipped penalty. You really have to have guts even think abut scoring a
penalty like that.Matteratzi had conceded the penalty that Zidane scored. Fortunately for Matteratzi he was able to make an amends for the penalty when he powered in a header from a corner.

There were no more goal in the match. But the major talking point of the whole match happened when Zidane head butted Matteratzi
in the chest during extra time. There are a few theories about why he
did it but I will leave them for another post. A photo taken at the
summed up the situation beautifully. It showed Zidane walking past the
world cup into the tunnel after he was sent off. It just summed it up.
France were visibly shaken after the sending off and went on to loose
the final 5-3 on penalties.

It was a dramatic end to a good
world cup. Italy were the team that grew as the tournament went on.
Even though from a purist point of view they dived to get past
Australia. I think they won the World Cup on merit especially as they
had the back drop of the scandal at home and alot of the players didn't know who they would be playing for in the season to come.

World Cup Diary - Day 20

I was looking forward to the Germany vs. Argentina game. I caught the second half and then, extra time and penalties. Germany did well to come back from a goal down but they were helped by the tactics of Pekerman.

Pekerman decided to take off Riquelme after they scored. This changed was designed to sure up the Argentinian defense so that they could hang onto their lead. Unfortunately it didn't work. The change made the Argentinians loose their impetance and they became really defensive. They lost their fluid passing and became quite ordinary.

Germany took the initiative from Argentina and got the goal. Extra time was a tense affair and penalties seemed enevitable.

The Germans were their old efficient self's in the penalty shoot out. Each one of their penalties found the net. Argentina were mentally drained by this time and they couldn't cope with the Germans.

It was a pity how Argentina played because in the early rounds the team play some super football.

In this match they went defensive and forgot to play the football that got them to this stage.

ARG 1 GER 1 (Germany win on penalties)

Italy and Ukraine played in quite a poor match. Ukraine played a very defensive game with Sevchenko the only attacking player. They played as if they were happy to be in the quarter finals and didn't want to go any further.

Italy were clinical as they finished off Ukraine with some goals.

World Cup Diary - Day 19

Spain vs. France was the match of the day. Spain started extreamely well by taking the game to France and showing the form that had taken them this far.

Spain got a penalty early on and it seemed that they would go on to take the match. However they were unable to do this. France managed to get back into the game and deservedly scored a goal before the break.

After the break the game was fairly even but Spain couldn't get to the level of play that they had in the early games. Just when we thought that the game was heading for extra time, Viera managed to score a vital goal. The goal came from a free kick that was won by Henry, it was a free kick because Puyol elbowed Henry in the chest. The reaction from Henry was poor because he cluched his face in his hands and fell to the ground as if he had been elbowed in the face. It was bad to see a player who has condemed diving in the past, do such a thing. The Viera goal knocked the stuffing out of Spain and they couldn't recover. Zidane finished the game off by scoring on the break.

FRA 3 SPN 1

I didn't see the Brazil vs. Ghana match but it was a below par performance by Brazil again.

BRA 3 GHN 0

World Cup Diary - Day 18

Italy seemed to have an easy route to the Semi finals with Australia and then Ukraine or Switzerland standing in their way. I watched half the match. It was quite a poor match with Australia not able to capitalise on the Italians red card at the start of the second half. The Australians couldn't turn their possesion into a goal.

The legendary Italian defense withstood all the Aussies attacks without much trouble.

In the end the Italians got a synical foul with one of their players just falling over an Australian defender. They got a penalty and Totti stepped up to convert it. I felt sorry for the Aussies who deserved to go to extra time atleast and only were stopped from doing this, by the gamesmanship of the Italians. The Australian defender went to ground to early in the box but this is no excuse for the Italian to take advantage so cruelly.

Some Australian supporters were interviewed after the game. They were disgusted by the antics of the Italians and asked if this kind of thing was common at the top level of the beautiful game. Unfortunately it is all too common.

ITA 1 AUS 0

I think I was one of the few people who watched all of the Switzerland vs. Ukraine match. Both teams were so scared of losing that they wouldn't go for the win. It was a really poor game (especially the second half) and it seemed that the match would never end. Fortunately it did end with Ukraine winning on penalties

World Cup Diary - Day 17

The second day of the last sixteen and it was time for England against Ecuador. England were playing a different system with Rooney playing up front by himself. This is not the ideal system to get the best out of Rooney but England have had to adopt this system because of Owens injury.

This system seemed to be more balanced then previous games. I think this is mainly due to the fact that Carrick was holding midfielder in a 5 man midfield. This allowed Lampard and Gerrard to play their natural attacking game without having to worrying about defensive duties.

Rooney worked his socks off up front as he chased all the balls that were played to him. Most of the passing was inaccurate and Rooney was mainly restricted to chasing long balls. Lampard isn't having a great world cup, he seems to be trying too hard and always snatching at shots.

Beckham got the goal from a free kick. One of the best free kicks in the tournament so far.

Overall it was a solid performance (apart from the Ecuador chance where it hit the bar). But not the best England performance by far.

ENG 1 ECU 0

How can I finish my post without mentioning the Holland vs. Portugal match. What a match. It showed some of the bad parts of football. Some bad refereeing decisions. But most of all it highlighted the play acting that has become part of the game. I have talked about this before. It seems that FIFA is more interested in clamping down on bad challenges and time wasting. However when it comes to CHEATING it is a very low priority. Players need to be deterred from diving. At the moment players will try to cheat and get a free kick because they know that there will be no punishment if they are caught diving. FIFA said that divers were supposed to get a yellow card but I don't think I have seen a yellow card being produced for diving in any game. There have been a number of instances when the referee has told a player to get to his feet after diving. If they are telling the player to get to his feet surely the referee feels the player is trying to buy a free kick and there fore should yellow card him.

Anyway the game was very tense and Portugal played well with less players than Holland for most of the match.

There was a very nice moment near the end of the game when two plays from Holland and Portugal who had been red carded (van Bronckhurst and Deco) were discussing the game and the refereeing while sitting on some stairs in the stadium.

I think people need to start reducing the pressure on referees and increase the pressure on players to behave in the correct manner.

World Cup Diary - Day 16

The last 16 started finally. So it is down to business.

Before the Germany vs. Sweden match started I thought that it would be quite difficult for Germany against Sweden. Sweden pushed England to the limit and I thought they would do the same to Germany.

How wrong I was...

Germany played really well, and Blitzed Sweden into submission. The German defense was still abit shaky but when they were going forward it was beautiful to watch. Ballack was pulling all the strings and Germany had a flow about them when they attacked.

Sweden had a man sent off and did have a chance to get back into the game when they got a penalty. They couldn't capitalise on the opportunity and Germany continue their progress into the Quarter Finals.

GER 2 SWE 0

Next the best game so far in the World Cup.

Argentina vs. Mexico was supposed to be a walk over for Argentina. This view was understandable because Argentina had been playing the best football of the tournament and Mexico had been playing average football.

The game started and Mexico exploded into the game. Mexico scored a good goal by taking the game to Argentina and showing no fear. Argentina were shell shocked and Mexico could have doubled their lead. As it happened Argentina got a goal back.

This game ws as football should be played with both team going all out to win the match.

The second half was more of a tense afair but both teams still had chances. Mexico had some injuries and had to use some of their substitutes. At a similar time Argentina were using their stubstitutes (Messi and Tevez). The two subs stated to run at the tiring Mexican defense but could break it down.

The game went into Extra Time and just as it started Maxi Rodrigues chested the ball and volleyed in a goal of the highest quality. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the brave Mexican team and they couldn't muster a reply.

The game ended with Argentina winning but Mexico can take a lot of credit for making a classic World Cup match.

The game showed the rest of the teams left in the world cup that Argentina can be beaten as long as you show no fear and attack them.

ARG 2 MEX 1
